History & Legacy of Sister Hazel Stillwell
"The Hazel Stillwell Scholarship honors the life, leadership, and service of Sister Hazel Stillwell, whose unwavering commitment to education, mentorship, and community uplift continues to guide this program."
A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP
Sister Hazel Stillwell was a distinguished leader within the Order of the Eastern Star and the Prince Hall Masonic Family. A Past Matron of Venus Chapter #69, she served the Eureka Grand Chapter as Grand Secretary from 1946 to 1951 and later as Worthy Grand Matron from 1958 to 1959. Her leadership reflected integrity, dedication, and a deep commitment to service.
NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL IMPACT
In 1976, Sister Stillwell served as International Grand Matron for the International Conference of Grand Chapters, now known as the Prince Hall Conference of Grand Chapters and Eastern Stars. She was the last sister to serve the national organization in a ritualistic format. Illinois served as the host state during her tenure, marking a significant moment in the organization’s history.
SERVICE TO THE MASONIC FAMILY
It all began with a simple idea fueled by a deep passion. As a small business, we pride ourselves on personal attention and dedication to every detail. Our approach is rooted in quality and integrity, ensuring that everything we do reflects our commitment to excellence.
MENTORSHIP AND BELIEF IN EDUCATION
A strong advocate for youth and education, Sister Stillwell mentored many young sisters, encouraging them to strive for excellence in all they pursued. While not a perfectionist, she believed deeply in doing one’s best and doing it well. Her love for young people and her belief in education remain central to the mission of this scholarship.
COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Beyond the fraternity, Sister Hazel Stillwell and her husband, Curtis Stillwell, were active leaders within the broader community. They were involved in organizations such as the NAACP and the Urban League and were devoted members of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. Their lives reflected service not only within the organization but throughout the community.

THE SCHOLARSHIP IN HER HONOR
In 1991, during the administration of Sister Hazel Cleo Clay and Brother Oscar V. Washington, the Education Committee and Scholarship Committee were combined and renamed the Hazel Stillwell Education and Scholarship Committee. This scholarship continues Sister Stillwell’s legacy by supporting students who demonstrate leadership, service, character, and a commitment to education.
